Something very interesting also shook out of that data. Your 4.4 and 4.3 speed guys were hitting 20, 21 MPH in those last 20 yards and the world fell back into order. Just like that, the miles per hour we keep hearing about totally made sense. You just take a player’s 40 time, subtract their 20 yard split, and then divide that number from the final 20 yards (or 60 feet if you’re using feet per second like I do). It’s generally considered true that players hit their top speed before they reach the 20 yard mark, so why can’t we just use the last 20 yards? Calculating it is pretty simple. I decided to see if we can find a better measurement of top speed, and it didn’t even take all that long. It’s that 4.24 isn’t a great measurement of top speed. We hear about players hitting top speeds of 20 and 21 MPH all the time, so if Chris Johnson’s 4.24, the fastest in combine history, was shy of that, how fast are these guys really? The answer, of course, is that they are not 4.24 guys. When I calculated Chris Johnson’s speed in MPH, I noticed it was 19.3 MPH. It was just a neat little way to show speed in a different way. In working through the data, I added in a little tweak to show how many miles per hour a player runs based on their 40. It makes sense on the surface, what with it being an actual measurement of speed over a long distance. Despite that, I never really questioned that the 40 was a good measurement of long speed. I’ve been building and improving my Relative Athletic Scores metric for years on the idea that relative athleticism has a much better correlation to player success than a single measure of speed. It has always been a good measure of a player’s long speed, though, right? Sure, some have questioned if the 40 is the best measurement of a player’s athletic ability, Hey, we’ve even built entirely new metrics out of that idea. Whether it was the NFL combine or a pro day, we measure player speed in the 40-yard dash, one of the most recognizable individual drills in sports. We know they’re fast both because they fly across the field every play and because we have at least once measured their speed. It’s always been full of fast players like Chris Johnson, Calvin Johnson, and Patrick Peterson. Another pair of corners are Stanford Routt and Fabian Washington, both clocked 4.29 seconds at the 2005 NFL Combine. The NFL is full of fast players. Next up is Jalen Myrick, who ran 4.28 seconds in 2017, tying with him is Hall of Fame corner, Champ Bailey who clocked a 4.28 in1999. Take New England Patriots wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, who joined this honorable mentions list at the 2022 NFL combine with a 4.28 40. before the combine became the spectacle it is today.įast forward a few decades and you have guys blazing through the 40. Prime Time who ran something between a 4.21 and 4.27 seconds. In fact, there are four guys that ran a sub 4.3 but couldn’t make the list, including the greatest corner of all time Deion Sanders. So don’t expect to see Randy Moss who ran a 4.25 or Bo Jackson who allegedly ran arguably the fastest 40 at 4.18. Corners are usually the fastest guys at the combine. When you think speed, one name that pops up is Miami Dolphins Tyreek Hill, who ran a 4.29-second 40-yard dash in 2016, but he didn’t make the list given he did not run it at the NFL Combine. There's only one setting, one blade, and no timers to worry about. After about 20 minutes, you get fully churned ice cream. You pour in your base mixture, and as the bowl spins, the paddle scrapes a layer of frozen material off the interior wall, incorporating it back into the mixture. The double-insulated freezer bowl fits into the base, the mixing paddle fits into that, and the plastic cover holds everything together. The process is simple and designed to be mess-free. The Cuisinart ICE-21 may not have all the bells and whistles of higher-end models, but it's fully automatic and can deliver quality homemade ice cream in 20 minutes, at an excellent price. It's not much cheaper than the Deluxe, which is why we prefer the latter.)Ĭuisinart ICE-21R Ice Cream and Sorbet Maker Review If that's the case, you can also look for the original Creami, which works the same way but has just seven modes. (Thanks to its online popularity, the Creami Deluxe may be sold out at many retailers. On top of all that, cleaning is easy: Most of the removable plastic parts are dishwasher-safe, and the blade itself is simple to remove and wash by hand. In our test, the blade did break up some of the larger chunks of Oreo, but we got thorough, even mixing that stayed that way after hours in the freezer. We love the mix-in mode, which incorporates solid bits into finished ice cream. The Creami Deluxe has 11 modes, with automatic time and speed settings designed for different textures and ingredients, from ice cream, sorbet, and frozen yogurt to milkshakes and Frappuccino-style coffee drinks. The great thing about the way this machine works is that the freezing and whipping process can produce all sorts of frozen treats. That's a decent amount, but making fresh ice cream on demand for a huge group isn't really feasible. Each of the two included cups has a maximum fill line for the base at about a pint and a half, which turns into roughly a quart of finished product. The actual whipping process with the Creami Deluxe takes just over five minutes, but you do have to prepare the base and freeze it overnight first. After two hours of re-freezing, the ice cream maintained its texture exactly, and the sorbet was still pretty good-a bit denser than we'd like, with a few ice crystals on top. Both were ready to eat and perfect straight out of the machine. With both sorbet and ice cream, the Creami Deluxe produced a firm and consistently textured product, with no ice crystals or un-spun base built up in the corners of the container. The unusual method made our Lab's team of trained chefs and experienced home cooks suspicious, but in the end, the TikTok-famous gadget turned out to be the best ice cream machine we've ever used. While most ice cream makers freeze the liquid base while whipping in air at the same time, the Ninja Creami starts with a jar of frozen base and uses a special blender-blade-like "Creamerizer Paddle" to give it proper smooth and velvety texture. “Sometimes when I close my eyes, I can’t see.” – Anonymous.“Seriousness is stupidity sent to college.” – P.“Stupidity is not a crime so you’re free to go.” – Anonymous Sarcastic Quotes on stupidity.“Run for your life! APD may be present with or without hearing loss. Individuals with APD usually pass standard hearing tests because standard hearing tests are designed to test the quietest sounds one can hear. To properly diagnose APD, special tests need to be administered by an audiologist. How Is an Auditory Processing Disorder Diagnosed? Who Can Diagnose an Auditory Processing Disorder?ĪPD is an audiological diagnosis, and therefore, the audiologist is the professional who generally makes the diagnosis. The social isolation of hearing loss is a tragic outcome of this untreated disorder. For adults, auditory processing disorders may lead to decreased communication due to frustration. For children, this often leads to learning difficulties in school and perceived behavioral challenges due to miscommunication. How Does an Auditory Processing Disorder Affect an Individual’s Life?Īuditory processing disorders make communication more challenging overall. Premature and/or traumatic birth history. There is no single cause of auditory processing disorder however, it is linked to risk factors such as (Musiek and Chermak, 2009): What Causes an Auditory Processing Disorder? Up to 5 percent in school-aged children according to the National Institutes of Health.Ī 2:1 ratio of boys to girls has also been cited. Some research has suggested a prevalence of 2-3 percent in the pediatric population (Chermak and Musiek, 1997), with other estimates at 3-5 percent (Santucci cited in Matson, 2005). The exact prevalence of auditory processing disorder is variable given the wide definitions of auditory processing and how it is measured in different areas. How Common Is an Auditory Processing Disorder? In adults, neurological disorders such as stroke, tumors, degenerative disease (such as multiple sclerosis), and head trauma can contribute to APD. It is likely that many processes and problems contribute to APD in children. Children with APD experience difficulties in less-than-ideal (noisy) listening situations and may have difficulties with reading, spelling, attention, and language problems.ĪPD is common in older adults, particularly when hearing loss is present. Who Is Affected by APDs?ĪPD is often associated with various learning disabilities. Individuals often need more time to process auditory instructions, they “mishear” information and look for visual cues to help fill in the missing auditory information. What Are the Signs and Symptoms of an Auditory Processing Disorder?Ĭhildren and adults with APD often report difficulty hearing in background noise, in rooms that reverberate (echo) and/or other less-than-ideal listening situations. This difficulty becomes more noticeable in noisy or challenging listening environments or when listening to complex information. Individuals with auditory processing disorders may not perceive subtle differences in sounds of words even though the sounds are loud enough. Broadly, auditory processing disorders negatively impact the brain’s interpretation of sounds. APDs affect the auditory areas of the brain.Īn auditory processing disorder is a broad term used to describe a variety of different auditory challenges rather than a single event. Auditory processing disorders (APDs) are referred to by many names: central auditory processing disorders, auditory perceptual disorders, and central auditory disorders.
